The objective of the -STC) on AMTA 2020 was to share with the participants the cutting-edge research and developments, carried out/observed, by the speakers in advanced manufacturing domain, for the products having immediate industrial applications, for Atma Nirbhar BharatThe speakers were distinguished research faculties from Foreign Universities (Hungary, Northern Ireland, & South Africa), IIT’s, NIT’s and other well reputed institutions.

2. Organised One-week online short-term course on ‘Smart Manufacturing Technologies & Applications’ (SMTA 2021) organized by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, SLIET, Longowal (20th-24th December 2021). A total of eligible 66 participants from different Engineering Universities/Institutes/Colleges & Industry attended the online STC -SMTA 2021. The objective of the proposed online short-term course is to share with the participants the cutting-edge research and development, carried out by the speakers in smart manufacturing domain, for “Self-reliant India (Atma Nirbhar Bharat)”. The registration fee of the e-STC was Rs. 500/-. A sum of Rs. 29,000/- (twenty-nine thousand) was deposited in the Internal Revenue Generation (IRG) Account No. 1688340298, CBI, Longowal.

Out of 15 experts, four International Speakers were from Thailand [Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok], Hungary [Savaria Institute of Technology], Northern Ireland (UK) [Ulster University] and Finland [Tampere University].

3. Organized One Week Short Term Course (Hybrid Mode) on Advancements in Material Processing and Additive Manufacturing (AMPAM 2024) from 8th -12th January 2024, as the Coordinator of STC AMPAM 2024. The Co-cordinators were Prof. Indraj Singh and Er. Divesh Bharti.

The objective of this short-term course (STC) was to put together research and developments related to advances in materials processing and to introduce the relevant features of additive manufacturing, to keep up with ever-increasing demands towards Industry 4.0/5.0. The speakers through lectures and interactive sessions shared with the participants the cutting-edge research and development, carried out /observed by them in subject domain, for “Atma Nirbhar Bharat”. The speakers were distinguished research persons & faculties from Industry, Foreign Universities/Institutes, IIT’s, NIT’s & other reputed institutions. They interacted online with the participants. The target audience/participants in this course were Faculty members, Research Scholars, and UG/PG students. Experts from Institute with whom MoU has been signed by SLIET (viz. IIT, Jammu; NIT, Jalandhar & NIT, Delhi) will also deliver expert talks on the theme of AMPAM 2024. With a focus on materials engineering, design, and manufacturing solutions for manufacturing industries, AMPAM 2024 addressed the challenges of working towards a sustainable society.

Sixteen speakers in total delivered expert talks in five days STC. Eminent Speakers were from most reputed foreign Institute/University, and Institutions of India including IITs, NITs, VIT-Vellore, who delivered expert talks within the spirit of the STC. Sixteen speakers in total delivered expert talks in five days STC, within the spirit of the Short Term Course. One of the experts was from Industry Dr. Prabhakar M., from Tata Motors Ltd., Jamshedpur (Jharkhand). Out of 16 experts, three International Speakers were from Northern Ireland (UK) [Ulster University], Singapore [National University of Singapore], and USA [Iowa State University]. The eminent resource persons also interacted with the participants through Chat Box/Voice for intellectual discourse and exchange of ideas. The feedback forms were circulated to each participant through AMPAM WhatsApp Group, on daily basis. A total of eligible 105 participants from different Engineering Universities/Institutes/Colleges participated in the STC -AMPAM 2024 from Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Telangana, Kerala. Odisha, Uttarakhand, West Bengal & South Africa. Seventy-three faculty members attended this STC, out of which six were from SLIET (internal). Sixteen Research Scholars also participated in STC from all over India. 06 PG and 09 UG students attended the STC. In addition, one Postdoctoral Research Fellow participated in AMPAM 2024 representing Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Technology, University of Johannesburg, South Africa. The registration fees of AMPAM 2024 was Rs. 250/-.

A sum of Rs 24,569/- collected in AMPAM 2024 account (No. 5495824959) as registration fees, was transferred on 29-01-2024 to Internal Revenue Generation (IRG), SLIET, Longowal, in the name of Director SLIET in Account No. 1688340298, Central Bank of India. Major thrust during the STC was on Advancement of Materials Processing and Additive Manufacturing, which featured the latest technology developments in this fast-growing field. With a focus on materials engineering, design, and manufacturing solutions for our key industries, AMPAM 2024 addressed the challenges of working towards a sustainable society, and to make a “Self-reliant India”

SECONDMENT TO ASIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (AIT), BANGKOK (THAILAND)

In compliance of Office Order issued by the Under Secretary, Govt. of India, Department of Higher Education, MHRD, I joined as Visiting Professor in the Department of Industrial Systems Engineering (ISE), School of Engineering & Technology, at Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok (Thailand) from August 2018 to December 2018.

During the stay at AIT, I taught the subject entitled Advanced Material Science for Design & Manufacturing (AT 73:9008), to Masters’ Students of Nanotechnology. The objective of the subject is to provide the student with the required know how to select the best materials for product development, emphasizing the function of materials and processes in product design.

Also guided the students in Minor project on ʺComposite Materials: Processing Machining & Testing ʺ and ʺShape Memory Alloys -Manufacturing, Machining and Testing ʺ, during the secondment.The undersigned also delivered Special lectures on the following titles:  Advanced Materials in Automotive Industries—Shape Memory Alloys: Smart Materials

Prof. Shankar Singh is also Faculty Advisor of the three teams of Mechanical Engineering department namely:Team ‘Junkyard Warriors’—design & fabricates ‘All Terrain Vehicle (ATV)’, Team ‘Green Rangers’ –design & fabricates ‘Efficycle’ and Team ‘Juggernauts’- design & fabricates ‘Go Kart’.
He has also been able to provide academic leadership to the team of students (NSIT RACERS ( at NSIT (presently NSTU), New Delhi), SLIET teams- JUNKYARD WARRIORS, GREEN RANGERS & JUGGERNAUTS), and it is felt that it has culminated in their tremendous performance at Baja SAE India (since 2007) and Efficycle (Since 2014) and Go kart event (since 2016).  Prof. Singh is also Faculty Advisor of team ‘Juggernauts’ for Go Kart Event since 2016. It is an event inviting engineering colleges across India to design and manufacture a ‘Go Kart’ in their respective campuses and then compete with other teams.

Baja SAE INDIA, a collegiate competition sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) India, for aspiring engineers to design and build an off-road vehicle, viz. All-Terrain Vehicle ‘ATV’, that will survive the severe punishment of rough terrain. Such outdoor platforms make the students step away from the class-room theories and bring about first-hand experience of building the ATV’s.

SLIET team ‘Junkyard Warriors’ have been participating in Baja SAE India since 2009.

SAE EFFICYCLE’ is a student competition by Society of Automotive Engineers -Northern India section (SAE-NIS) which tasks engineering students all over India to design and build human-powered vehicle namely “EFFI-CYCLE”. The SAE Effi-cycle event aims to provide an opportunity for engineering students by setting up a trend of using eco-friendly vehicles in India and producing innovative designs. The event provides a recognized platform for students to tackle the real-world problems which have future implications for the automobile industry. The SLIET team ‘GREEN RANGERS’ has been participating at Efficycle events since 2014.

The team designs and fabricates a three wheeled hybrid human powered vehicle, which has the capacity to act as a good viable option for local transportation.

Year 2022:  The 13th season of EFFICYCLE 2022, a student competition by Society of Automotive Engineers-Northern India Section (SAE-NIS), which tasks engineering students all over India to design and build human-powered vehicles, namely “EFFI-CYCLE”, was hosted from 22nd-25th November 2022 at Lovely Professional University, Phagwara, Punjab.

The ‘all new team’ participated after three years since 2019 in physical mode…after a long COVID break. The team was ranked 5th in ‘Conventional Efficycle Segment’.
